Gabby and Truth both jockeyed to take point.
Abe lowered his head and nodded as if being told something. His backpack was open with its surveillance and comm equipment extended. They didnât have Zoliâs drones, but Abe popped out inflatable drones that buzzed into the air to get a clear aerial view.
âHeâs a couple klicks away,â Abe said and shook his head. âI donât know if we can make it to him.
It was the squadron of ambusher FAVs that left base during the decoy operation. Based on the noise they were making, they came back with friends.
Pappy looked at Gill. She shook her head. âHe knew what he was doing,â she said.
âHeâs holding them off, for us,â Pappy said. âStanding his ground and buying time for us to escape. God damn it Chopper. We need to do something.â
Gill shook her head and put a hand on his arm.
âChopper,â Pappy called through the intercom. No answer.
âChopper. What the hell are you doing, you crazy son of a bitch?â
There was a long pause. When Chopper got back on the mic, he sounded out of breath and less cheery than usual. âYou kiss yo momma with that mouth?â
âGet back here,â Pappy begged. âWeâre leaving together.â
Another pause. âSorry podna, canât do that,â Chopper panted. In the background, Pappy heard the pantherâs engines roaring, and the popping sounds of laser fire. âYou gone have to hoof it from here.â
Pappy checked the mini map. Chopper did a good job of driving the panther in unpredictable loops, but they were slowly encircling him.
âHey Pappy?â Chopper hollered.
âYeah?â
âHave a good âun. Whoohoo.â
His mic went dead. Over the horizon, Pappy saw columns of smoke, and knew that Chopper was giving them hell. Eventually, he saw a bright flash of light and knew that a Regime plasma weapon found its mark.
After that, the firing abruptly stopped. A single massive column of smoke rose into the sky like a hand waving goodbye.
